India expressed its intent to include Chabahar port in the 13-nation International North South Transport Corridor (INSTC) that extends from India to Russia


  • To expand INSTC membership by including Afghanistan and Uzbekistan, at a “Chabahar Day” event organised as part of Maritime India summit.
  • This Summit saw participation from several regional officials including infrastructure Ministers from Afghanistan, Armenia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Uzbekistan.

 International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC): What is it ?

  •   It is a multi-modal transportation established on 12th September 2000 in St. Petersburg, by Iran, Russia and India for the purpose of promoting transportation cooperation among the Member States.
  •     The INSTC was expanded to include eleven new members, namely: the Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Armenia, Republic of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkey, Republic of Ukraine, Republic of Belarus, Oman, Syria, Bulgaria (Observer).
  •     It envisions a 7,200-km-long multi-mode network of ship, rail and road route for transporting freight, aimed at reducing the carriage cost between India and Russia by about 30% and bringing down the transit time from 40 days by more than half.

Project-75I: What is it ?

  •     The Project 75I-class submarine is a follow-on of the Project 75 Kalvari-class submarine for the Indian Navy.
  •     The project is being processed through the Strategic Partnership (SP) model of the Defence Procurement Procedure (DPP).
  •         The strategic partnership model seeks to identify a few Indian private companies as Strategic Partners who would initially tie up with a few shortlisted foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to manufacture big-ticket military platforms.
  •         It aims to promote the role of Indian industry in defence manufacturing and build a domestic defence industrial ecosystem.
  •     This project is part of the 30 year Plan for indigenous submarine construction and it got its approval by the Cabinet Committee on Security in 1999


Defence Acquisition Council : What is it ?

  •     The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is the highest decision-making body in the Defence Ministry for deciding on new policies and capital acquisitions for the three services (Army, Navy and Air Force) and the Indian Coast Guard.
  •     The Minister of Defence is the Chairman of the Council.
  •     It was formed, after the Group of Ministers recommendations on 'Reforming the National Security System', in 2001, post Kargil War (1999).

 

India’s first forest healing centre inaugurated in Uttrakand’s Ranikhet


The forest healing centre has been developed by the Research Wing of Uttarakhand Forest Department after research on the healing properties of the forests. It is spread over an area of around 13 acres.

This healing centre has been established in a pine-dominated forest as it has been found in various studies that coniferous like Pine trees emit certain oil compounds to safeguard themselves from various microbes and pathogens, which are called phytoncides.
 

 Google Launched “Women Will” Web Platform

 Google has launched a new web platform ‘Women Will’ on March 8, 2021, on the occasion of “International Women’s Day”. This platform will provide its support to 1 million rural women in India in order for them to become entrepreneurs with the help of accelerator programmes, business tutorials and mentorship.

This web portal can be accessed in English and Hindi languages. It will offer guidance to the aspiring women in villages to turn their interest or a hobby like beauty services, tailoring, home tuition, food processing, etc. into the business.

It will also be providing guidance to manage and promote the business. The Women Will platform is designed for women aspiring to explore entrepreneurship.

Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana becomes changing factor for lives of tribal women in Manipur

 Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana : What is it ?

  •  Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana which was launched in 2018 by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India with an intention to improve the tribal income through value addition of tribal products.
  •  The scheme has become a changing factor for the lives of many tribal women in Manipur

Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Vikas Yojana which aims to transform the economy of tribal people was launched in Manipur in the year 2019. Under the scheme, the State Government has been focusing on collection, processing and value addition of non-timber forest products.
 
Manipur has 77 Van Dhan Vikas Kendras comprising 1,995 Self Help Groups (SHGs) and around 25,000 beneficiaries. Registration of another 100 Kendras are under process and TRIFED has agreed to do funding for making storage and construction of hut bazaars for the products produced by SHGs.
